Saint-Emilion is a medieval village with a selection of monuments that bear witness to the rich spiritual, mercantile and wine-growing history, both within the town itself and in the surrounding area.
The steep, narrow streets lead visitors through a village that is shaped like an amphitheatre.
The limestone plateau to the south served as a quarry, from which rocks were extracted to support the building of houses, castles, churches and monasteries over a period of several centuries.
